August 22, 2012 Thomas Love showcase part 1
Congratulations to our winner of the Olympic Poster Design competition which we were running during the London Olympic Games, London 2012. Here is a an interesting piece of graphic design work by Thomas Love for you all to look at.
On his own work:
“Last summer, my friend Katie and I, decided that instead of having a standard Halloween party, we should do a murder mystery instead and that if we were going to do so we might as well go the whole way! One of our all-time favourite films is the 1985 cult classic ‘Clue’. We took this amazing film as inspiration and created a complete murder mystery party for 15 people! From scratch!
Katie wrote a lot of the back stories and prompts for the characters whilst I concentrated on the graphics and the props. Above are just some of them including book covers, newspaper cuttings, business cards, birth certificates and much more. Each one of them had some link to the story and would help uncover the murderer. For example, what appears on first sight to be a fun prop of a book actually turns out to be a vital clue to a long hidden secret!
The evening was a great success and the murderer was revealed, but I’m not going to tell you who!”
This is a fantastic tip for any new designer, if there isn’t any work around, make it for yourself or friends! You never know when someone might want to see your portfolio.

Congrats Thomas! His party ideas sounds like a lot of fun! I’ve done murder mysteries as well, and it’s a great way to bring something different to seeing your friends. But Thomas seems to have taken it a step further than we did – glad it was a success!

Yeah, that’s amazing Thomas! I’m Kim’s sister (from the above comment), and it’s been fun discovering what successful or not successful in terms of uncovering secrets and storylines. Had you ever done a Murder Mystery before, to base how it should be written and solved?

We had no idea how to write one at first. We did lots of research online looking at samples and getting ideas. I’ve been to one before but wasn’t keen on they way it was set out, I think it was a kit one. It relied on lots of little pieces of paper and dialogue which seemed a bit tedious and we thought it could get a bit dull.
Like I mentioned we tried to reduce that and actually turn everyone into detectives to get them to explore and search for clues. There was some dialogue though. Katie and I had scripted dialogue but everyone else’s was kept to a minimum.
Each character was also loosely based upon a friend as well! The book cover you can see belonged to my friend Jess’ character Amelia Brown. Jess loves books and english literature so obviously we made her an author!
It was a great experience and if we ever did one again we now know what sort of stuff works and what doesn’t and it’s been great work to add to my portfolio like MinaLima suggested!
